Quirky Vintage Buttons

January 2016
January 2016

Hello! Do you ever have an accessory or other item in your wardrobe that you love so much that you can't help but style your whole outfit around it? I did just that with this look! I've had these quirky vintage buttons forever but haven't worn them in ages and decided it was time for them to come out of hiding again! I selected these three playful pins from my jewelry selection based on their whimsical appeal, graphic design and bold colors.

Originally, I was just going to style my look around this "try kissing instead of smoking" pin but I decided that it looked lonely by itself so I paired it with a "wasted" smiley button and "dressed to kill" button. As a side note, shout out to my mom for this rad "kissing instead of smoking" button. I received the smiley face button with an order years ago at ShopWasteland and scooped up the "dressed to kill" button at Anthill Antiques in Richmond, Va (if you're ever in RVA, you should definitely check the shop out!!)

I decided that I really wanted to let the buttons shine so I paired them with a basic black dress, black thigh-high socks and black heeled booties. I didn't want the buttons to have to compete with any small-scale prints or colors for attention. I decided to emphasize the "kissing instead of smoking" button by highlighting the red colors in the button with a red bandana neck scarf and a bold red lipstick.

Of course I would have been freezing without a coat so I decided to pair this bold, black and white faux fur coat with the outfit. This Cruella De Vil-esque coat gives off the same sort of rad nineties soft grunge vibe that the buttons do. A classic pair of black shades complemented the outfit.
